"Ceramic art and sculpture by one of this region’s most versatile creators, Suvira McDonald, will be on show over the weekend of October 27 and 28. The occasion is Suvira’s annual open studio, which takes place in the tranquil setting of his rainforest sculpture garden near Goonengerry.

The artist’s signature ceramic landscapes are sought after by collectors from around Australia and abroad, and this year gained him a finalist spot in the prestigious Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize. Produced as ceramic panels and mounted on perspex, these exquisite images are inspired by the Australian land.

An accomplished potter, Suvira makes tableware influenced by oriental glazes and styles. These lustrous platters, bowls, vases, teapots and mugs are ideal for gifts. His sculptural works range from elegant steel structures to rugged clay and wood totems – many of which are designed to withstand outdoor display.

As well as teaching art, Suvira’s other activities include project managing the installation of a large sculpture and community-created mosaic at Federal, and planning with other artists to grace Mullumbimby with a sculpture walk. His current community effort is a collaborative sculptural assembly of large rocks at the top of Mafeking Road. 

During the weekend of the Open Studio, visitors will have the chance to acquire Suvira’s distinctive works at studio prices. Hours are from 9 am to 4 pm, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 October. The studio is located at 300 Mafeking Road, (off Federal Road), 30 minutes from Byron Bay and Lismore.
